Boarding school for Brussels families: Belgium or Switzerland?.

You live in Brussels and are considering boarding or an international school? We compare Belgian options with small French-speaking boarding schools in Switzerland, choosing for your child's profile.

Staying in Belgium

Boarding schools and Brussels international schools allow frequent trips home.

The Swiss option

Boarding by Lake Geneva, small classes, Swiss maturité, French bac or IB.

No visa

As EU citizens, Belgian students do not need a visa to study in Switzerland.

Official calendars: examples in Blonay and Vevey

Checked on 25 October 2026 — these dates apply only to the 2026–2027 academic year, not the 2027–2028 intake. Chantemerle, Blonay: classes start on 1 September 2026 at 08:00; the school year ends with the closing ceremony on 18 June 2027 at 16:00, according to the official calendar. LémanMaturité, Vevey: the official school calendar marks 24 August 2026 as the start of term. These are class dates, not application deadlines or boarding arrival times. No fixed application deadline was verified on the admissions pages reviewed. For international applicants, LémanMaturité recommends completing enrolment at least two months before classes, ideally three to four months beforehand: this is preparation guidance, not a guarantee of a place. For 2027–2028, obtain the confirmed calendar, availability and boarding arrival date from the school before booking. These Riviera examples do not apply to other Swiss schools. Follow the official links below for holidays and updates. Travel: check SNCF Connect, TGV Lyria and SBB for your dates. Chantemerle is at Chemin de Chantemerle 7, 1807 Blonay; LémanMaturité lists Rue de Fribourg 6, 1800 Vevey. With boarding via Chantemerle, the boarding and teaching locations are separate. Allow for connections and the final transfer; no fixed journey time is guaranteed.

Options around Brussels

Brussels and Wallonia have boarding houses attached to secondary schools, often with weekends at home, and many international schools linked to the EU institutions. Places and arrangements vary widely.

Why look at Switzerland?

A direct Brussels–Geneva flight takes about 1h15–1h20 depending on the airline. This excludes airport formalities and the onward transfer to school. French-speaking Switzerland offers boarding schools in a multilingual setting, with close supervision and internationally recognised diplomas.

What budget to expect

As a guide, a Swiss boarding school usually costs CHF 50,000–100,000 a year including board. Exact fees vary by school and age: we check them with you for each school.

How we help

Частые вопросы

Does a Belgian student need a visa for Switzerland?+

No. Thanks to free movement between Switzerland and the EU, they get a student residence permit from the canton, with proof of funds and insurance. Schools often help.

Is the Swiss maturité recognised in Belgium?+

For a bachelor's programme in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, a Swiss gymnasial maturité generally requires equivalence to the CESS. This decision does not guarantee admission: programme and institution requirements still apply. In Flanders, check the procedure directly with your chosen university.

When should we apply?+

Each school sets its own calendar. Check the official sources below and confirm application deadlines and boarding arrival dates directly.
