English boarding schools attract many families, but Switzerland offers a nearby, multilingual and often more flexible alternative. Here are 5 points to compare before deciding.
Language
English or multilingual
In England, everything happens in English.
A UK boarding school means full English immersion. In French-speaking Switzerland, teaching is in French, English or bilingual, often with German too. For a child whose English is still weak, Switzerland offers a gentler transition.
Diplomas
A-Levels, IB, maturité, bac
The diploma shapes university options.
UK schools mostly prepare GCSEs then A-Levels, sometimes the IB. Swiss schools offer the IB, the Swiss maturité and sometimes the French bac. Choose with the target universities in mind.
The school year
Terms and weekends
Calendars differ.
UK schools run three terms with exeat weekends set in advance. Swiss calendars are closer to the French one, making trips home easier.

Switzerland needs no visa for EU citizens.
Since Brexit, EU pupils may need a student visa for a UK boarding school depending on age and length of stay. Switzerland needs no visa for EU citizens, only a cantonal residence permit. Rules change: check before applying.
